Summer Time

Summer, 2013

It has been another summer in Texas. Hot, humid and not a lot of hunting. I have managed eliminating a few hogs, but mostly I have been fishing. It is a lot easier to endure the heat when you are standing in water.

We have kept the feeders full all summer, and I started work on some blinds this past weekend. After sweating every ounce of fluids out, I decided that it may be a little early to start thinking about hunting. I did see quite a few does with babies and one bachelor group of eleven bucks. There is still a little work to do on a new bow blind, and one of our box blinds is in desparate need of a new floor. Hopefully I can get this knocked out in the next few weeks.

I am anxiously awaiting dove season. It opens on September 20th, and I think we have our hunt lined up that morning. I am booked to go on a West Texas mule deer hunt in October, and I have glimpsed quite a bruiser whitetail I may be chasing in DeWitt County. Its starting to be that time of the year again, so knock the dust off those shotguns, rifles and bows and get ready.

Until next time...

Thanheiser Quail Hunt

February 2, 2013

Cuero, Texas

The dogs were not in the best shape, and the weather man decided to make it a hot one... But we hunted quail anyways, and a good time was had by all.

This was the second time I have had the pleasure to put on a hunt for a friend of mine, Matt Thanheiser. Matt and his posse met me southwest of Cuero at one of the hunters' beautiful ranch for the hunt. We got started around 9:00 and hunted hard until about 3:00. I was able to film a little video and snap a few pictures of the dogs at work.

Deer Season Wrap Up

South Texas

Deer Season 2012-2013

I know, I know... Everybody has been anxiously awaiting my next post. Sorry. I've been too busy quail hunting, but I will save those write-ups until a later date. I just looked at my cameras and realized I had quite a few pictures from friends and family that never made the blog.

I am in the process of editing film from three or four different quail hunts. As I get them completed, I will start posting them. I am still a newbie at video editing so it takes me a while. Until next time...

Inflight Outfitters Quail Hunt

January 15, 2013

Dinero, Texas

Here is my first quail Hunt with my GoPro. It is a little different hunting with a camera strapped to your noggin, but I like the way the video turned out. Enjoy!

I am working on a few more videos so be looking for them. Editor's note: please ignore the date at the beginning, it was filmed in 2013. Until next time...

Camp Had It - Filling the Freezer

December 7-9, 2012

Laredo, Texas

Finally!!! I put a little meat in the freezer. It has been a long time coming this year, but I managed to harvest a couple of does at Camp Had It near Laredo this weekend. I made it to the ranch just before dark on Friday evening and sat for about thirty minutes. Only a few deer moving, but I did see a couple coveys of quail.

Saturday morning I sat in a blind that seemed like the nursery area for the ranch. I saw several very young bucks along with a couple does with yearlings. The view from this blind was pretty awesome, and my pictures don't do it justice. I could see half of Webb County.

After a quick breakfast, we went riding around on the highrack looking for does to cull. Somebody opened their mouth and told me I couldn't hit a doe eating corn at 450 yards. Here she is loaded up on the way to the skinning rack.

I always enjoy just riding around big properties. You never know what you are going to come across, like an indigo in the middle of December. Or hundreds of ducks on a tank.

Saturday evening found me back in the blind looking for another doe to harvest. Again mostly young deer were on the move in the sweltering heat. Just at dark I decided to take a doe I had been watching for a while. She will eat good.

Here is video of shooting this doe. Just a warning, this video and the other two I have below show does being shot. If you don't want to see that, don't watch them. Consider yourself warned.

Now that I had my two does, I decided to sit with my father-in-law Sunday morning. There seemed to be more deer moving this morning, but we made a short hunt of it with him taking two does by eight o'clock.

And his kill shots:

And back at the house:

It was great to finally have a little success after all the hours I have spent in the blind this year. Now that it looks like we are going to get a little cooler weather, it may be time to find out if my dogs still know what a quail is. Until next time...
